Biography

“Chienne de joie” explores the porosity between hysteria, popular dance, and 19th-century erotic imagery of women. By invoking the figure of the bitch, coupled with gestures inspired by the “hysterical” postures of the Salpêtrière and the cancan dancers of popular entertainment, Paule seeks to highlight the subversive dimension of the female body in the grip of madness, in this case conceived as an expression of anger. She explores the erotic-comic aesthetic as a reappropriation of the stigma of the figure of the nymphomaniac madwoman, collective insurrection, and sexual disobedience of women.
